Despite the downturn in passenger arrivals occasioned by the eruption of the Mount Agung volcano, the number of domestic and international passengers traveling through Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport reached 20 million for the calendar year 2017, exceeding the 19,985,000 passengers handled in 2016.

Balipost.com reports that the general manager of Angkasa Pura I, Rai Yanus Suprayogi, expressed the hope that new apron facilities now being built will assist in achieving a growth rate of 8% in 2018. The airport authority manager said he felt visitor arrivals to Bali would be assisted in 2018 by a number of major events slated for the Island, including an Internation
al Monetary Fund-World Bank meeting in October.

To mark the changing of the year from 2017 to 2018 the management of the Ngurah Rai International Airport bid farewell to the last departing flight of the year – Emirates EK399 destined for Dubai. Shortly thereafter, the managers were still on hand to welcome the first of 2018 Air Asia QZ537 from Perth that landed at 3 minute past midnight as fireworks lit the adjoining beaches at Jimbaran and Kuta. Serenading passengers as they disembarked the first flight of the year, a traditional gamelan orchestra provided a musical welcome.

Suprayogi said that passenger comfort and service rank foremost for Angkasa Pura demanding those special moments, such as the passage to the New Year, require equally special preparations.
