PT Angkasa Pura I (PT AP-I) the management authority for Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport has announced plans to expand the parking area for motor cycles at Bali’s air gateway have been put on hold due to the sudden and dramatic increase in the cost of sand used in the construction process.

Dating from mid-September when a volcanic alert warning was put in place on Bali’s Mount Agung, the cost of sand excavated from the area surrounding the mountain has undergone a large price increase.

Quoted by the State News Agency Antara, the general manager of PT AP-I, I Gusti Ngurah Rai Bali Yanus Suprayogi, said: “investment activity have been halted mostly because the price of sand and stone has increased five-fold. We can’t go on (at this time).”

Yanus said that the supplies of stones and sand used in the construction process are excavated from open pits (Galian C) in areas surrounding Mount Agung.
Because of a volcanic alert at level “IV” that was implemented on September 22, 2017, excavation activities in Karangasem have largely come to a halt.

The parking lot for motorcycles at the airport was expected to be completed in November 2017 must now wait until price levels for sand and stones returns to more normal levels. Contractors building the parking lot claim they are unable to honor the price won via tender with the large increase in the cost of materials.
The new parking area for motorcycles is targeted to accommodate 3,000 vehicles.
